General Secretary's Message

The world has been facing numerous challenges in implementing sustainable development goals (SDGs) that aim to jointly contribute to better economic, ecological, and social development by 2030. The 'Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)', or sustainable development, refers to those types of developmental activities through which economic progress is ensured and there is no adverse impact on nature and the ecosystem or ecosystem. In other words, the Sustainable Development Goals are a set of future international development goals. The issue of sustainable development came first in 1987, in the Bruntland Commission's report. On September 25, 2015, at the 70th General Conference of the UN all member states with the consent and were introduced the “Agenda 2030”. The features of this new agenda are universal, integrated, transformative and inclusive development philosophy. The main point of this development thinking is that people of every country of the world should reach the benefits of development in the same way. This intention is extremely broad and ambitious.

Bangladesh is one of the early starters of SDGs implementation. The SDGs implementation started at the end of 2015. Since then, the General Economics Division, Planning Commission Bangladesh has been spearheading successive initiatives for implementing the SDGs. According to the SDG Index and Dashboards Report 2018 of the United Nations Sustainable Development Solutions Network, Bangladesh is ranked 111th among 157 countries. Overall, Bangladesh's scored 59.3 aggregately in 2018. Its position and score in 2017 were 120 and 56.2 respectively. Excluding India, Pakistan and Afghanistan, Bangladesh is ahead of South Asian countries like Nepal, Bhutan in the rankings.

The country deserves a better position in the SDGs achievement ranking since the Bangladesh economy continues to grow at an impressive rate. However, the SDGs implementation is a gigantic task. Various agencies, including the government of Bangladesh, are working to achieve these goals. To promote SDG implementation, government, as well as all parties, involved such as representatives of private development agencies, representatives of marginalized communities and development partners are required. This will expand the accountability of the state and society.

Through its continuation, Kernel Foundation has been actively involved in promoting SDGs. Sustainable Village Development Model is one of the initiatives to promote SDGs taken by the foundation. The main purpose of this model is to create such kind of village model wherein stakeholders actively participating in alternative social infrastructure which promotes environmental sustainability, responding disasters, and community-managed resources; towards a balanced society and decentralized governance for the common good and welfare. To create a real impact, the foundation has already started working on this sustainable village model and taken some initiatives, especially in women empowerment and employment generation sector. In addition,   the foundation is thematically working in sub-sectors of Community development, Emergency Response, Women and Youth Empowerment, Agriculture and Food Security, Good Governance & Rule of Law, and Peacebuilding, Research to promote Sustainable Development Goals. Kernel Foundation is proud to contribute in the succession and the promotion of SDG through this Sustainable Village Development Model and tries to open up a real possibility. We are committed to furthering this potential for the welfare of the country, at the same time, it will be helpful to create awareness of SDGs among the larger population.

Hopefully, Bangladesh will gradually become a country where people will be motivated by the spirit of the SDGs, where no one will be left behind when it comes to sharing development facilities.
